Museo de Gallo is the largest Art Brut
Museum in Cuba. This exceptional open-air museum is the work
of Héctor Pascual Gallo Portieles who has an interesting
past.
Born in Havana in 1924, Héctor Pascual
Gallo Portieles began working as a barber's apprentice at
the age of 12 when his father was deposed of governership
and his family faced financial hardship. Shortly before the
revolution, he took part in the calendestine action against the bloody
Batista regime. Thus, he was appointed commercial
representative to Paraguay by the newly formed government
after the victory. However, his primary role was as a covert
security agent. A semi-literate Hector Gallo served in 20
countries as a diplomat. While ambassador to Cambodia, he
abandoned his profession at the age of 58 to pursue writing
and giving lectures.
His retirement and the cessation of
Soviet aid plunged Héctor Gallo into severe financial
hardship. His pension was not enough even to eat.
Consequently, he was forced to leave his spacious apartment
flat in Vedado for a small apartment in neighborhood of
Alamar, in the outskirts of Havana.
Hector Gallo, who was 65 years old and
had no motivation left, managed to hold on to life by
devoting himself to art. He began collecting unused,
abandoned objects of various sizes and materials, creatively
combining them to unique objects. He placed the newly formed
objects in his garden, giving them as though a second life.
This led to the creation of El Jardin de los Afectos (the
Garden of Love). He placed smaller objects throughout his
home, which he called La Galeria. Soon, the entire garden,
his apartment, and even the adjacent sidewalks were filled
with all manner of incredible objects. He transformed items
such as typewriters, sewing machines, old televisions, and
other discarded materials into stunning art pieces while
breathing new life into these objects. According the
philosophy of Hector Gallo the life is not but a permanent
transformation of the matter and that is what makes it
eternal.
Hector Gallo's works were exhibited in
Havana in 2014 and 2016.
Museo Gallo is located on the 5th Avenue, Edificio 11C, Apt. 1, Micro Diez, Habana del Este.
