The restaurant Castropol run by the
local Austrians Society. It occupied a two-story colonial
building at Malecón. The upper floor was renovated and
transformed into a restaurant. The balcony overlooking the ocean
and Havana's dreamy sea drive, was an excellent place for dinner.
The walls of the ground floor were
covered by bare bricks. The ground floor was generally preferred
by the locals that look for something to eat for a cheaper
price, like pizza, pasta and charcoal grilled food. Pizzas were
made with fine olive oil and baked in a wood fired brick oven.
However, the upstairs was a little bit
more elite, with paella, garbanzos fritos (fried chickpeas),
prawns in a tangy sauce, and lobster pan-fried in butter. As
starter, Serrano ham filled with cheese and raisins, smoked
salmon and lobster ceviche were recommended.
