The ocean front restaurant serves as a
seafood restaurant at daytime. The place is run by the Ministry
of Fisheries; this explains why the fish and seafood are so
fresh and generally well prepared here.
The menu is extensive, but it is
recommended to taste the simply prepared fresh fishes like
snapper or grouper, or you can try the crab appetizer plate.
They do a lot of cheese and gratin sauces, often with shrimp,
crab, or lobster thrown in.
It is highly recommended to sit
outside on the patio right beside the ocean and around the
closed swimming pool that occupies most of the place. If the
weather will not permit or if you want to sit in the heavily
air-conditioned inside, choose one of the upper floor tables at
the window just off the bar.
The Don Cangrejo is also a place where
the people in Havana end up after they have dined at home,
because it becomes a party venue at nights. The place is one of
the most sought-after venues on a Friday night in Havana, as the
night club is an open space that faces the ocean front and the
music is provided by great live musicians playing contemporary
fusion music that ensure the dancefloor stays busy all night. On
the other hand, there are live performances every night from
some of Havana’s most sizzling bands. The dancefloor is in fact
the huge covered swimming pool. It is a crowded place; in the
majority the crowd consists of young people. Make sure
you’re there early, because there are often queues.
