The modern and stylish bar El Gato
Tuerto (the one-eyed cat) is located just down the road from the
Nacional Hotel of Cuba. In fact, it has also a restaurant
upstairs, but it gained fame by its bar.
The spacious restaurant has a moderate
decor. The tables are apart from each other; a feature that you
will not see in most of the restaurants in Havana, but the
service is rather slow. They serve traditional Cuban and
international food. Recommended dishes are lobster fried in
butter with a little sweet-and-sour sauce, ropa vieja (shredded
beef) and onion soup.
From time to time, the iconic bar
becomes the meeting point for local artists and intellectuals.
The dimly lit bar with gleaming furniture is known for its
intimate atmosphere. There is also a small stage for live
performances on Fridays and Saturdays like slow paced Latin
bolero, as well as Cuban trova music and jazz. A few tables
surround the stage. Don’t miss the super cocktail selections on
the menu, even though they are expensive. El Gato Tuerto is
popular among Cubans since a long time, but it is also
frequented by the tourists, mostly older than 40 years of age.
