The paladar San Cristóbal, named after its owner Carlos Cristóbal Márquez Valdés, occupies the downstairs floor of a charming mansion, built in the early 20th-century. Since it was open in 2010, it is known by its fine food in Havana; however, its fame increased even more, after US President Barack Obama took the dinner with his family in San Cristóbal on the evening of the first day of his official visit to Cuba in 2016. They stayed in the second room. The chair, the check and the wine bottle are kept as memory, and they can be seen by the guests.
The decoration is composed of
beautiful antique furniture, nostalgic black and white photos,
bull fighting posters, antique record covers, piles of old
books, selection of clocks, religious artifacts, animal hides
(full-size zebra pelt) and porcelain. In the front room, there
is also a small shrine consisting of the black Virgin Mary
(similar to the Our Lady of Regla image), flanked with Cuban
flag and the photo of José Martí and Antonio Maceo.
The restaurant serves typical Creole
food of the colonial Cuba, such as malanga, cassava (yucca),
roast pork, lobster, fresh fish, shrimp and other
traditional dishes, influenced by the palatal delight of Spain,
Africa, China and the Caribbean. The dishes are served with a
complimentary glass of house rum. As appetizer, it is
recommended to taste the Spanish tortilla, caramelized eggplant,
garlic octopus, deep fried fish, malanga fritters, smoked salmon
and ceviche. Don’t forget to try the pudding San Cristóbal.
