The Farmacia y Drogueria Taquechel, known also as Santo
Domingo Pharmacy in 1870s, was established as a prestigious pharmacy of the
city, adapted from a colonial dwelling house by Dr. Francisco Taquechel Mirabal,
in 1898. It was remodeled again and again, until it became one of the most
luxurious of the time. In 1996 it was restored and inaugurated as a special
museum with an extensive collection of French porcelain apothecary’s jars from
the 19th century and different laboratory tools, found in some excavation sites
of the historical center of Havana, such as a French porcelain water filter, a
solar microscope and antique measuring pots. There are also some books to resort
to some Alder recipes.
Today, the place functions as pharmacy and museum to
show and divulge the investigations in the pharmaceutical field in the 19th
century. It retains many of its original elements, from the floor-to-ceiling
cedar and mahogany shelves to the ancient crystal chandeliers. In this
tourist-focused pharmacy, from the admirable collection of the porcelain jars to
the cash register and the skeleton, every detail deserves praise.
Nowadays, the store offers a wide range of natural
remedies, such as shark cartilage, products derived from calendula and marigold,
and cream of algae, homeopathic medicines, cosmetics, dietary supplements and
other products that are made in the pharmacy's own laboratory, as well as
products of modern medicine, such as the popular anti-cholesterol medication
PPG, to stay up-to-date with the new requirements.
The Farmacia y
Drogueria Taquechel is located on the Obispo street
#155, between the San Ignacio and the Mercaderes streets.
