The Fuente de las Américas is located at the beginning of the 5th Avenue, just after the exit of the Calzada tunnel.
The Fuente de las Américas is the
first image that you will see when you will drive through the
Calzada tunnel to proceed to the 5th Avenue. It was built to pay
tribute to the discoverers of the continent America,
particularly to the Admiral Cristobal Colón (Christopher
Columbus).
The fountain was designed as part of the construction of the Avenida de las Américas (current 5th Avenue) within the frame of the urbanization project of Miramar, and it was inaugurated in 1924. It is the work of the American architect John Wilson and the Italian sculptor Pietro Manfredi.
The fountain is placed between the
roads that goes into the tunnel and exits from the tunnel
The fountain is made of white marble. Four nereids on each side of the long octagonal body, like caryatids, are holding ponds on their heads. The ponds are in the shape of giant oyster shells from that the water spills into the common pool. In Greek mythology the Nereids are sea nymphs and they often accompany Poseidon, the god of the sea. They symbolize everything related with the sea and water. The national shields of Cuba are placed in the front and back side of the hexagonal body.
Even though it is a fountain, often
there is no running water. However, when the water starts to
come out from the ponds, the view is magnificent, particularly
at night, when the fountain is illuminated.
