When
Fidel Castro begun to study in a small local school in Birán at
the age of four years in 1930, his teacher persuaded his parents
about his high capacity to study and awareness, so that they
sent him with his sister Angela to Santiago de Cuba to continue
his study in a school with more facilities. Fidel was five years
old when he arrived in Santiago de Cuba. He stayed in the house
of his teacher that had a poor family. The money sent by his
parents as sustenance was used first for the five family members
in the house. Despite
the good economic situation of their family, Fidel, his brother
Ramón that arrived later and his sister Angela experienced
hunger in this humble house. His parents noticed the conditions
in that their children lived and took them back to Birán in 1932. However, the
parents reconciled with the teacher that promised to improve the
living conditions, so that Fidel was sent back to Santiago de
Cuba to continue to live in this house until 1933.
