Hotel Casa Granda is located on the east part of the Céspedes Park, between the Aguilera and Heredia streets.
One of the important buildings around
the Céspedes Park is the Hotel Casa Granda. It lies between the
cathedral and the old city hall.
In 1909 the Cuban Railroad Company
purchased the plot on which Hotel Granda stands today, to build
an elegant hotel to represent Santiogo de Cuba properly. The
project was prepared by the architect Carlos Segrera and the
construction was undertaken by the company Amigos y Hermanos.
The hotel was built in 6 months, in a record construction period
for that date and opened on January 1914.
It is named after Don Miguel Granda
that previously used the building as his residence, and later as
guesthouse. With the opening as a hotel, it became the preferred
site for banquets and balls for the high society in Santiago de
Cuba. The whole structure is renovated by the architect Sandra
Alvarez Barthelemy between 1993 and 1995. It was the setting for
the scene in Graham Greene’s novel Our Man in Havana. Greene’s
famous fiction portrays Cuba’s degenerate gambling and
prostitution culture at that time.
Currently the hotel is included in
the hotel chain group of Iberostar, so that its name changed to
Hotel Iberostar Casa Granda.
The building consists of 4 floors. It
provides especially two areas to relax and to enjoy the time:
the rooftop bar and the front bar. The historic and atmospheric
front bar with balcony on the ground floor is a wonderful place
to sit and watch the world go by over a glass of fresh lemonade.
The rooftop bar is a fantastic place to escape the intense heat
and catch a breeze as you looked out over the best view in the
city, as well as to admire the sunset. At night you can sup your
mojitos by listening to the music performed in Casa de la Trova.
