TEATRO HEREDIA
The Heredia Theater got its name from the illustrious
santiaguero poet José María Heredia y Heredia. After a
construction period of 5 years, the building was inaugurated at
a cost of 41 million Cuban pesos in 1991. The idea of
building
a new theater worthy of the second largest city in the country,
was put forward by Raúl Castro in 1982 (he was Vice President at
that time). It was built with the idea to fill the empty space
left by the destruction of the Aguilera Theater by a fire, and
the closing of the Oriente Theater. Today it functions also like
the center of fairs, conventions, and meetings, as well as of
artistic and cultural shows.
The modern building is set also with features of colonial
architecture. The project was led by the prestigious Cuban
architect Antonio Quintana Simonetti that has also constructed
the Palace of the Revolution in Havana which is used as the
headquarters of the presidency and the government. The main
hall, together with the balcony, has a capacity for 2450
persons. The building contains also 9 rooms, with the capacity
from 30 to 300 persons, with facilities of simultaneous
translation, audiovisual equipment etc. The Café Cantante
Niagara is a special point where you can listen to the popular
musicians and poets of Santiago de Cuba. The dance floor is
named after Pacho Alonso (1928-1982) who was a Cuban bandleader
and singer, having sang with Benny Moré, Fernando Álvarez,
Ibrahim Ferrer. Numerous Cuban artists have performed on the
stages of this theatre, such as the National Ballet of Cuba and
its director, the prima ballerina Alicia Alonso.
A depiction of Juan Almeida Bosque (1927 – 2009),
Cuban politician, and commander of insurgent forces,
adorns the outer wall of the Heredia Theater and Conference
Center.
