The
Palacio de Gabierno, also known as Cámara de Representantes
de Cuba (House of the Representatives of Cuba), is a
neoclassical building, built as an extension of an old
colonial house after the War of Independence in 1895. At the
end of the American military occupation in 1902, it became
the seat of the House of Representatives until the
inauguration of the majestic building El Capitolio in 1929.
In the first decade of the Republic, it was one of the three
large buildings that were converted into a building for
public use. As it is known, it was the third building where
the national flag was raised before the declaration of the
Republic in 1902. Upon the movement of the House of the
Represantatives to the Capitolio, the building was occupied
by the Ministerio de Instrucción Pública (Ministry of Public
Instruction) (1929-1960), and Fine Arts, and later the
Ministry of Education. In 1959 the resolution for the
National Literacy Campaign (Campaña
Nacional de Alfabetización) was signed here. In 1986 it was
handed over to the Poder Popular Municipal (Municipal People
Power) of Havana, and finally, in 2000 it became the
Government Palace Museum (Museo Palacio de Gobierno).
The building is renovated and opened to the public.
The Palacio de Gobierno is located on
the Officios street #211, between the Muralla and the Churucca (Callejón
de Churruca) streets.
