The Farms In the Valley
In the valley, there are 73 sites of archaeological importance,
including the 13 haciendas. A hacienda, a word derived from
Spanish “hacer” (=
to make from), is an estate of
considerable size in Spanish-speaking countries or regions.
Haciendas were plantations, including animals or orchards,
mines, or factories, while many of these haciendas were
combining these activities. All colonial haciendas were owned
almost exclusively by Spaniards or the Creole people. The
haciendas in Valle de los Ingenios typically consisted of a
sugar mill, a dwelling house ornately built for the time, the
barracks where slaves lived, and a watchtower built to watch
over the slaves.
When you will visit some of the haciendas in the valley, besides
the ornately built dwelling houses, you will see also boiler
houses, purging houses, warehouses, water wells,
cisterns, infirmaries, slave cemeteries, and all kind of
industrial equipment that were used in the sugar production in
the 18th to 19th centuries, among other facilities.
In fact, the Valle de los Ingenios was a center for sugar
production from the late 18th century until the late 19th
century with established 70 sugar mills, of which only 13
remained to day. Among these restored haciendas are
Manaca-Iznaga, Buena Vista, Delicias, Guáimaro, Magua, San
Isidro, Santa Elena, Guachinango, San Pedro, La Pastora, Guinía
de Soto, Algaba and Abanico.
Currently, a conservation plan is developed in this
territory. The Valle de los Ingenios can be considered an
eco-cultural system where monuments, nature and society
interact, which makes it an objective of high artistic value.
